Port Commission Urges Update to Tanker Cars

July 29, 2016

Port of St. Helens Commissioners have drafted a letter to Global Partners LP, a tenant at Port Westward, to upgrade to the safest tanker cars available, as ethanol shipments are transported through the county.

The encouragement comes just weeks after the derailment in Mosier that left traces of groundwater contamination. The Columbia River Gorge derailment caused alarm in Columbia County, where rail lines divide cities and run along major highways carrying hazardous and flammable materials, like ethanol.

Port of St. Helens Executive Director Pat Trapp mentioned any tanker car changes “wouldn’t happen overnight”, and Port Commissioner Chris Iverson recommended writing a formal letter to Global Partners “to at least tell our position and that we should encourage them [to upgrade]”.
