A Brief History:
When formed, the Port's land holdings were such that a full-time maintenance department was not required. Most development, repairs and maintenance were completed by local contractors. As the Port grew it became necessary to form a full-time maintenance department. In 1992 the department was formed with a supervisor, assistant and two maintenance workers. From 1995 to 2003 most of the major repairs were completed and through attrition the department was reduced to two maintenance specialists and a working maintenance manager. The Maintenance Department continues to take on special projects as well as routine maintenance and repair of sprinkler and hydrant fire safety systems, monitoring systems, domestic water systems, airport and runway lighting systems and building structural systems to name an few. The maintenance department also works closely with the Columbia River Youth Corps, employing student groups annually for special summer projects such as: Wetland mitigation, Scappoose Bay clean up, construction projects and etc.
